I can already hear the Republican hacks (Hannity, Limbaugh, etc) whining.

Let me put some stuff out there first. I disagree with President-Elect Obama’s stated policies. As a political conservative, I am a little disappointed. But thankfully, my politics are not all there is to my life. In fact politics play little part in my life outside of having conversations with the people who blindly follow the aforementioned Republican hacks.

Here’s the thing -

I do not agree with the way President-Elect Obama wishes to bring about the change he wishes to see, but I agree that these things must change. I believe the Church should be the agents of change, that the government’s job is to protect us, not to provide for us.

The American people sent a message tonight. And now it is time for Christians to become what we have been all along, the respectful, transpolitical voice of Jesus in the world.

Many of my uber-conservative friends cannot stand former president Bill Clinton. I understand why. He committed acts of immorality and adultery; he let power go to his head; he was (and is) a staunch liberal on social issues and foreign policy.

I get it.

I don’t agree with his politics. I don’t like the way he cheated on his wife and then lied about it.

I get it.

I didn’t vote for him in ‘96; and I wasn’t old enough to vote in ‘92. I wouldn’t vote for him if he were running today.

I get it.

But, I like the guy. He is a highly likeable person. He appealed to a very wide base of Americans because he is likeable. And he is a better speaker than pretty much anyone I’ve ever heard.

I am so tired of Barry Obama’s cadence when speaking; I am so tired of the way George W. Bush pretends like he is connecting with his audience and appears to be completely oblivious to what is really happening.  They both speak like the American people are idiots.  Bill gives you the impression that you’re his best friend.

I don’t know what it is. I just like Bill Clinton. I imagine he is an absolutely amazing conversationalist; and I love to talk with people who disagree with me.

Here’s another reason I like him. He’s no longer running for president. That means he speaks his mind, and doesn’t care what people think. I know that right now he is towing the party line and supposedly campaigning for Barry Obama, but let’s be honest - he’s not campaigning for Obama, he’s campaigning against John McCain. Truth be told, I don’t think he’s particularly fond of Barry from Illinois.

And he says things that tell me he’s not totally behind the guy. When Bill was behind his wife’s candicacy, he tore apart the opposition without any remorse. But now, he’s defending Sarah Palin from the media, trying to direct attention to the issues:

“My view is … why say, ever, anything bad about a person? Why don’t we like them and celebrate them and be happy for her elevation to the ticket? And just say that she was a good choice for him and we disagree with them?” [Source]

I agree, former president Clinton. I don’t like pretty much anything about your presidency (although I will admit you balanced the budget, which is something Reagan and the Georges could not do). But, darn it! Against my better judgment, I like you.
